Bruxism/Teeth Grinding

Person with bruxism sleeping.Bruxism can occur for a number of reasons, but there is general agreement that stress, tension, anxiety and sub conscious anger and rage are significant factors underpinning the behaviour. Hypnotherapy is an effective treatment that tackles the unconscious basis of teeth grinding.

Symptoms of bruxism include:

  • Pain or tenderness in the jaw and the side of the face
  • Difficulty opening the jaw or waking with the mouth clamped
  • Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) and associated jaw clicking when eating
  • Tightness and stiffness of the shoulders and damage to the teeth
  • Ear ache
  • Headaches

Initial treatment focusses on reducing stress and tension through the use of direct suggestions. This enables the jaw to relax and improves sleep.

It may also be necessary and beneficial, depending upon your circumstances and preferences, to address any deep seated feelings of anger and rage from the past that are present and significant as contributing factors.
